Demolition and the collapse of buildings result from irresponsible practices that harm communities that lack the resources to deal with these devastating events. News of collapses and destruction often leaves neighborhoods with little support for recovery. Local residents affected by these incidents frequently suffer due to neglect of quality, leading to damage and the erosion of collective memory over time. However, there is hope through advocacy, media attention, and protest.
In response to demolition, my memorial will serve as both a reflection space and a space for community engagement. Communities heal through spaces that invite story sharing and engagement. Recreation and reflection spaces can produce hope, while storytelling can create and honor memory. With reflection and engagement in one place, the memorial serves to educate people about its history and invites the community to be part of changing it. Acknowledging that demolitions and collapses will hurt communities again, it is essential to create spaces where communities can grieve together and where their experiences are at the center. Therefore, my memorial sparks curiosity among people unaware of the demolitions and serves as a safe space for community residents.
